Roots and Wings: Finding Stability and Freedom After Loss

I often think of life as a tree. Its roots sink deep into the earth, steadying it against storms. Its branches stretch upward, giving shelter to those who rest there and sending birds into the open sky.

When we go through loss, it’s easy to feel like the storm has torn us from both our roots shaken, our wings clipped. But healing isn’t about choosing one over the other. It’s about finding the balance between the deep grounding that keeps us safe and the brave flight that takes us somewhere new.

The Strength of Roots

Roots represent stability, grounding, and connection. In hard seasons, they’re the people, practices, and beliefs that keep us from toppling. Roots can look like morning rituals, nourishing friendships, a faith or spiritual practice, or the comfort of nature. Roots keep us able to stand tall against the storms of life.

The Freedom of Wings

Wings are our capacity for growth, exploration, and change. They help us try something new, take a risk, or step into a fresh chapter. Wings can look like starting a creative project, making a move, building new relationships, or simply allowing ourselves to dream again. Despite the fears, we can soar into the sky.

Finding the Balance

Too much rooting without flight can leave us feeling stuck. Too much flight without grounding can leave us lost. True healing after loss means both nurturing and grounding ourselves enough to feel safe — and daring enough to open our wings when the time is right.

We all need roots that hold us steady and wings that remind us we can rise. Too much of one without the other leaves us unbalanced either stuck in place or lost in the wind. The beauty is, we can choose to tend both.

If you’re ready to deepen your roots and stretch your wings again, I’d be honored to help you find that balance. Your next season can be both grounded and free.
